Awareness is probably the greatest protection against ticks. The following will help minimise the risks.
- Discuss tick control for your pet with your veterinary surgeon, and use a product licensed to kill ticks on your dog.
- Cover up when out walking in tick-affected areas. Tucking trousers into socks can help prevent ticks getting inside.
- Contact your doctor promptly if you experience flu-like symptoms or a rash after being bitten by a tick, or if the bite becomes infected.
- Contact your vet promptly if your pet suffers unexplained lameness, joint stiffness, fever, lethargy or loss of appetite after being bitten.
